Stairlift disability grant

You may be eligible for a Disabled Facilities Grant if you are on a low income. The Disabled Facilities Grant is a local council grant that helps to adapt your home environment for a better quality of life. This could include mobility aids such as the following:

  • Widening doors and installing accessibility ramps
  • Providing or improving access to rooms and facilities – i.e. by installing electric stair lifts
  • Adapting heating or lighting controls to make them easier to use

Using these mobility aids allow you to stay in the comfort of your own home instead of having to pay high costs for elderly residential homes. If you have lived in your home all your life, why would you want to move out of it?

Using the grant has proven to be beneficial to many disabled residents. You can claim for the grant if you, or someone living in your property is disabled. The disability grants are only available in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Scottish residents will need to contact their local council to see what funding is available. Each person is assessed as an individual so the amount may vary depending upon your needs. If you have a partner that is disabled, your combined income will be assessed as a joint case.

One thing you must consider is the foreseeable future within the home. You will be required to sign a certificate to say that the adapted property will be your main residence for the next 5 years.

More information about Disabled Grants can be found on the Direct Gov website.
